|LOCATION||Elan Valley, Wales|
|TIME||10:00 to 16:00|
If you wish to capture natural scenery combined with grand architecture then look no further than the beautiful Elan Valley in central Wales. The Elan valley area boasts an extensive series of Victorian dams and structures built by the Birmingham Water Corporation in the late 1800’s. Over 9 years between 1893 and 1904 a series of dams and supporting structures were constructed in this remote area to supply the expanding population of industrial Birmingham with its increasing water needs. The legacies of this impressive feat of engineering add impact to the dramatic landscape images we hope to capture on this session.
Our ‘Architecture in the landscape photography workshop’ will begin with a welcome introduction at the Elan valley visitor centre car park where the Wild Arena guide will run through some basic compositional techniques to ensure you get the most out of the day. We will then head out to the first of a number of locations around the valley to find interesting and inspirational subjects for our images. These locations are likely to include Afon Elan, Craig Goch dam, Garreg-ddu reservoir, Nantgwyllt Church and newest dam at Caerwen.
As with all of our landscape photography workshops, we will ensure everyone gets individual attention to help develop their personal photography by having small group sizes and plenty of time for constructive discussions. Other photography topics covered on these sessions might include: Compositional ideas (the rule of thirds, lead in lines, shapes in the frame, the focus of the image, perspective and simplicity), the use of tripods, practical application of filters for landscapes, using shutters speeds creatively for the inclusion of movement and creative use of apertures to control depth of field.
10.00: Arrival at the meeting point followed by an introduction and briefing from your guide.
10.30: Photography session 1. We will visit several locations through the day including the Elan River and Craig Goch dam. We will discuss how best to capture the dam architecture in the open landscapes using various photographic techniques and ideas.
12.30: Lunch break (please bring a packed lunch).
13.30: Photography session 2. The group will move to other locations including Nantgwyllt Church, Caerwen and nearby waterfalls.
16.00: Summary and close.
PLEASE NOTE: Our itineraries are listed as a guide and we may need to alter them depending on unforeseen circumstances, weather conditions or the availability of the subjects. Start and finish times are fixed to enable transport planning.
